A dead motherboard is the repair we're most careful to quote honestly, because it's the one where a shop can most easily talk you into spending more than the device is worth. Here's how we actually make the call.
What "motherboard problem" usually means
A blown capacitor, a failed power circuit, liquid damage that reached the board, or a short caused by a failed component elsewhere in the machine. Not all of these cost the same to fix: some are a component-level repair, others mean sourcing a replacement board entirely.
The question we ask before you spend anything
What's the device worth once it's fixed, against what the fix will cost? If a motherboard repair or replacement runs close to (or past) the price of a comparable working machine, we'll tell you that plainly, before any work begins. That conversation happens on the first visit, not after we've already opened the case.
When it's usually worth fixing
- A single identifiable component failed (a capacitor, a port, a power stage) rather than the whole board
- The device is otherwise in good condition: screen, keyboard, battery all healthy
- It's a higher-spec or harder-to-replace machine where a new equivalent costs significantly more
When we'll tell you to walk away
- Water damage has spread corrosion across multiple points on the board
- The repair cost approaches the price of a similar working replacement
- The board is an older or discontinued model where parts are scarce and expensive to source
Component-level repair vs. full board swap
Where possible, we repair at component level, replacing the specific failed part rather than the whole board. It's more work, but it's usually cheaper and keeps a perfectly good machine out of the bin over one bad capacitor.
